This past weekend I went to banjo camp. It was incredible. I know, I say that every year.
This year, my first two classes were with Michael Miles and Ken Perlman. These guys are fabulous instructors. It was a great review of the basics of clawhammer, and of drop thumbing and double thumbing. You don't realize that you pick up litte bad habits between one banjo camp and the next.
Michael Miles did one class on "If Bach Had A Banjo". It was absolutely unbelievable to hear a roomful of banjo pickers playing a Bach Minuet. What a thrill.
I didn't even think of taking pictures I was so caught up in the banjo playing. However, during the concert on Saturday night, I snapped a good one.
This is Wade & Julia Mainer. They have been playing music together for 70+ years. Wade is 100 years old and Julia said they will have been married 70 years this year. What a fun couple. The sparkle between them is inspiring. When so many marriages fall apart within months, it's heartwarming to see that it can last. Wade and Julia did an interview that was fun to listen to, and very funny, and they played a few songs.
What a thrill to have been there for something like that.
Virgil, in the background, whose surname escapes me, did a terrific job of playing back up for them.
The entire "banjo immersion" weekend was outstanding. Kudos to the organizers, all the instructors and everyone else who did their part to make it so much fun.
