Looks Are Deceiving

As I was working on the inside contours of the back of my violin yesterday, it occurred to me that the weight of it is much lighter than when I started working on the piece of maple. So I weighed it. It now weighs about half as much as our little African Grey Timneh parrot, Merlin.

That's very light.

On another note. Quirks and Quarks did a show on Alex the parrot. Very impressive. Seeing your parrot reminded me that I wanted to look up Alex.

I just went to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_(parrot) and found this little section and ended up crying like a baby. Enjoy!

* "When Dr Pepperberg left Alex with a vet for treatment, Alex vocalized the words 'Come here. I love you. I'm sorry. I want to go back.'" He learned how to connect Love, staying together, and sorry with feelings.[13][14]

* According to Dr. Pepperberg, the final time she saw Alex was on Thursday September 6. They went through their goodnight routine in which she told him it was time to go in the cage. She recalls that Alex said, "You be good. I love you." She responded, "I love you, too." He said, "You'll be in tomorrow," and she responded, "Yes, I'll be in tomorrow."[3][6][8]

I think that is the first picture of Merlin. You blog lots of pictures of Muggins. You are going to cause sibling rivalry by playing favourites. I think Merlin needs a blog of his own too.

I just weighed mine and it's 525 grams, but that's all put together with strings and chin rest. I'm guessing that the back will lose about another 10 grams this weekend, then it will be finished. The front shouldn't take nearly as long because the spruce is softer. Then we'll be almost ready to glue the bottom part together. I'm pumped!
